Viewing and forwarding 'full headers'

For solving problems with your e-mail (especially problems related to spam), you may be asked to forward a copy of a mail message with full headers to the helpdesk.

The headers of a mail message (of which only a few are displayed in regular use of your mail programme) do contain a lot of technical information about the message: amongst others, about the route pursued before delivered at your mail address.

Step 1: Viewing the full headers

The various mail clients and webmail programmes have very divergent options to make the full headers visible.
Detailed information for the most commonly used programmes can be found in the right column of this page.

If your mail programme isn't listed there, you may find the information on the site of WHOA.
Naturally, you can also consult the help function of your mail programme.

Step 2: Forwarding the headers

When the full headers are visible:

1. Select the text (in Windows: with Ctrl-A or the option 'Select all'). (*)
2. Copy the text (in Windows: with Ctrl-C).
3. Paste the text in a new message (in Windows: with Ctrl-V).
4. Send us the new message.

(*) If very large attachments are added to the message, it is advised to select only the headers and the first part of the message text.
