The mailing list programme Mailman at a glance

Distribution or discussion list

Mailing lists can be applied as 'distribution list', e.g. to spread an electronic newsletter amongst 'subscribers': your customers or other persons interested.
You can also use mailing lists as 'discussion list' to exchange ideas with a group of persons. In such case, the 'members' of the list as well can send mail messages to the other members.
These options are set in the control screen 'admin', which includes many other configuration options for your mailinglist.
Listinfo and subscribing

'Listinfo' is the general user screen with web access.
Those interested can subscribe here for receiving your newsletter or for becoming a member of the list. Existing subscribers/members can log in to configure their user options.
If you own a website, you can include a hyperlink to the web page 'listinfo'. A more clever solution is, of course, including a subscription form on one of your web pages.

User configuration and unsubscribing

After login, subscribers/members can set a number of options with regard to the delivery mode of the list messages. They can as well modify their password.
And, last but not least, they can unsubscribe from the list if they wish.
Welcome message to new subscribers

New subscribers/members - provided that they are accepted by you - will not only result from web subscription. Obviously you will also want to add new names to the list by yourself. That's why all new subscribers/members receive a mail message confirming their subscription/membership.
This automatically generated message contains a short explanation of the list and available user options, as well as the required username and password.

Messages from and to the list

The above screenshot is an example of a mail message to all subscribers/members of a mailing list: one simple mail address and everyone receives the message!
The message in question is sent by the list administrator. You can furnish such messages with links to the 'listinfo' page, or, in common practice, with details how to unsubscribe if wanted.
Archive

The list messages can be archived.
You can choose whether the archive shall have public access (suitable in the case you have a newsletter) or whether access shall be limited to members (suitable in the case of a discussion list).
The build-up of the archive are units that can be a day, week, month, quarter or year.

Archive consultation

The messages in an archive unit can be consulted in 4 ways: by subject, author, date or thread.
In case of a 'discussion list', reading by thread is very appropriate: successively you can read the original message, reply to that message, reply to that reply, and so on.
Overview of subscribers/members

You can decide whether the subscriber list shall have public access, only for members or only for yourself.
In order to prevent spam-abuse, it is advised to handle this with caution or to play safe.
For the same reason, you have the option to display the addresses in a different, safer way, as illustrated in the above screenshot (the displayed addresses are, as a matter of course, fake).

Subscription forms for your mailing list
Instead of pointing people to the web page 'listinfo' of your mailing list, it may be wise to create a subscription form on your website.
